Why Bet the Over in the Brazil vs Colombia Match

The Copa America group stage will draw to a close on Tuesday night, and it appears that CONMEBOL has saved the best for last, as Brazil takes on Colombia in a must-win game.

As opposed to Colombia, which rides into the match on the back of a stellar run of form, Brazil has had a decidedly more unpleasant 12 months. The Selecao suffered their first-ever home defeat in a World Cup qualifier in a 1-0 loss to Argentina at the Maracana in November. Fernando Diniz was given the axe in January after just six months at the helm. Dorival Junior replaced him, leading the team to three wins and three draws thus far.

After being held to a 0-0 draw to Costa Rica in their opener, Brazil got back to winning ways and demolished Paraguay 4-1, squandering a penalty in the 31st minute only to respond immediately by scoring three goals before the break. Omar Alderete would pull one back after the interval, but Lucas Paqueta would atone for his penalty miss by adding to Brazil’s advantage in the 65th minute.

Brazil has failed to keep a clean sheet in eight of their last 10 matches, and there’s reason to believe that trend will continue in California. They’ll be forced to push from an opening goal from the start which could leave space for Colombia to exploit and carve out danger in transition, with James Rodriguez spraying passes and testing the keeper from range and Luis Diaz looking to find the back of the net for the third time in four games.

Brazil has scored 3+ goals in three of their last five matches, and it seems likely that they’ll need to extend that pattern on Tuesday to come away with the top spot in their group. This has the makings of a high-scoring affair.

  • Colombia has avoided defeat to Brazil in their last four meetings played outside of Brazil.
  • Vinicius Jr.’s brace vs. Paraguay was his fifth of 2024.
  • Each of Colombia’s last five matches has featured over 2.5 goals.
  • Colombia has scored 3+ goals in five of their last seven matches.
  • Four of Brazil’s last five matches have seen both teams score.

Luis Diaz: Colombia’s X-Factor

Three years ago, Luis Diaz finished atop the Copa America scoring charts alongside Lionel Messi with four goals, one of those against Brazil in a 2-1 loss. Colombia would avenge their defeat in their most recent match-up on Nov. 16, which saw Gabriel Martinelli break the deadlock after four minutes. Diaz would come to the rescue in the 75th minute before giving them the lead to ensure a 2-1 victory in World Cup qualifying.

The Liverpool winger was at his best in Colombia’s most recent match vs. Costa Rica, scoring from the penalty spot in the 31st minute and paving the way for a 3-0 victory in Arizona. I’m betting on him to come up clutch once again. At +350 soccer odds, he’s good value to find the back of the net in California.

This is the third time in four matches that I’m picking Diaz to find the back of the net in my Copa America betting predictions.
